SOME writers have so confounded society with government, as to leave little or no distinction between them; whereas they are not only different, but have different origins. Society is produced by our wants, and government by our wickedness; the former promotes our happiness POSITIVELY by uniting our affections, the latter NEGATIVELY by restraining our vices. The one encourages intercourse, the other creates distinctions. The first is a patron, the last a punisher.
Society in every state is a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one: for when we suffer, or are exposed to the same miseries BY A GOVERNMENT, which we might expect in a country WITHOUT GOVERNMENT, our calamity is heightened by reflecting that we furnish the means by which we suffer. Government, like dress, is the badge of lost innocence; the palaces of kings are built upon the ruins of the bowers of paradise. For were the impulses of conscience clear, uniform and irresistibly obeyed, man would need no other lawgiver; but that not being the case, he finds it necessary to surrender up a part of his property to furnish means for the protection of the rest; and this he is induced to do by the same prudence which in every other case advises him, out of two evils to choose the least. Wherefore, security being the true design and end of government, it unanswerably follows that whatever form thereof appears most likely to ensure it to us, with the least expense and greatest benefit, is preferable to all others.
So begins one of the greatest thesis on government ever written, COMMON SENSE by Thomas Paine.
Paine was of course addressing the ruling of the colonies by England but it is quite relevant today because our government although now on our shores might as well be on another planet. On January 20, 2009 the form of government that Paine, the Founders and Framers bestowed on this great nation, while still operating in its original form, will no longer exist.
I do not say that lightly and it pains me greatly to utter those words because greatest nation ever conceived and blessed by God will have completed the transition from individual rights granted by our Creator to be protected by the Constitution to collective rights granted by the government.
The election of a black man to the Presidency proves what has been evident for decades; America has moved beyond its racial past: That taken by its self is laudable. However, it is overshadowed by the ideology of the President-elect and the Congress that is now even more “Progressive” than the 110th elected in 2006.
There is a great hue and cry for all Americans to “rally ‘round” our new leader and to pray for and work for his success. I will indeed pray for President-elect Obama. I will pray that God would turns his mind from his ideology and to keep him safe. I will never work for his successful implementation of Neo-Socialism or pray that he succeeds with that.
My Christian Brothers and Sisters will say, “Don’t worry, God is in control.” I know that He is; what worries me is that we may have tried His patients and He is about to show us He is in control.
All is not lost. For awhile reality will serve as a constraint on the President and Congress which may help to mitigate the damage to our Country. We have two years before the next election. Remember 1994, Clinton and the Democrats had their heads handed to them as the GOP took over both houses of Congress.
It can happen again and we can be a part of making that happen. Join us here at SOLUNDERGROUND and help us make “Change” that makes sense.
